Dear Younger Tom,
How are you?
It’s been a while since we last connected via these letters, it’s been the usual rodeo of managing work, childcare, extra commitments and anything else life throws my way.
I hope your doing okay and taking the time for yourself as you sit here and read my words. Self care really is so important and is often overlooked.
So get your favourite mug and pour yourself a delicious hot brew… I’m sipping on a coffee, whilst gazing out the window at the glorious trees, waving gently in the wind, displaying their vibrant red, orange and yellow leaves. It’s very peaceful.
I wonder where you are?
In today’s letter, I would like to discuss the topic of getting curious as a means to develop our creativity when sitting down to write.
Having made lots of connections recently, I’m starting to feel my inner imposter rising up, especially when it comes to the idea of what to write in my newsletters. I don’t know about you, but I have started to feel an unwelcome pressure to be consistently interesting when I write.
All of these lovely subscribers have signed up to read my words and I am imagining all of them sat with their fingers hovering over the unsubscribe button, poised ready to depart at the first sign of boredom…
Oh the pressure on my troubled brain and unsure fingers, struggling to find an idea worth exploring.
The benefits of getting more curious
Well dear boy, there are many benefits and probably more than fits the scope of this letter but I will attempt to provide a brief summary to whet your appetite to live a more curious life.
Curiosity lies at the start of every great achievement because it creates within you a deep hunger for learning and the gaining of new knowledge. You will quickly find that you have an insatiable desire for understanding how things work and will be inspired to put your newfound ideas into practice.
The unfamiliar will become familiar.
You will find yourself being forced to adapt to new experiences; circumstances & information.
This is the key to opening the door to growth. Getting more curious will give you the courage you crave to walk through it.
You will fall in love again with learning, as you find new ways to deepen your thinking as you work on introspection.
You know when you struggle to get fresh ideas and new insights, or perhaps you are struggling to see a new perspective… you simply need to just get more curious and the ideas will start flowing through your mind a like a beautiful waterfall cascading ideas deep into your subconscious.
This skill will allow you to see beyond the obvious and see another person’s perspective easily. That’s a pretty useful skill to have, don’t you think?
You will find your enthusiasm for life soars as you commit to doing the hard work required for deep thinking; reflecting and asking tougher questions about your area of study. Your levels of excitement and passion will be enhanced.
When your work requires you to become more efficient and productive, or you have been tasked with putting a plan into action… well you know the answer don’t you… simply get more curious.
That’s right.
So, I’m curious as to how you are going to use this information to get more curious about your writing journey here on Substack.
How can you leverage the power of curiosity to reach out and deeply connect with your subscribers?
Let me know in the comments below.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
Older Tom
